Navigating the fine line between creativity and compliance:ย
How can street photographers in Singapore honour artistic freedom while respecting personal privacy? This panel discussion brought together Fujifilm X-Creators, leading photojournalists, legal counsel, and media academics to tackle the very question.
Moderated by PPAS President Aaron Ang, the conversation examined key considerations under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA)โfrom capturing candid moments in public to managing identifiable subjects. Below, you’ll find the practicalย Guidelinesย developed from this session, offering a clear framework for balancing intent, ethics, and legal rights.
Exploring the wild through the lens – responsibly:ย
What does it take to capture stunning wildlife and bird photographs while safeguarding Singapore’s nature parks? This panel discussion brought together acclaimed wildlife photographer Makoto Ando, the National Parks Board, Mandai Nature, and the Nature Photographic Society (Singapore) to share insights.
Moderated by National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 Jayaprakash Bojan, the conversation explored best practices for ethical fieldcraft, minimising disturbance to animals, and fostering a sustainable photography community. FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS
“Excellent workshop- highly recommend.” ~ Pang Teng Lin
“The personal passion of Mindy Tan fuelled this workshop beyond the simply “good” level and turned it into a transformative event that I definitely benefited from, as well as, I clearly see, other participants.” ~ Oleg Moskvin
“Very insightful course, Mindy provided really great critiques and suggestions for improvements that we can instantly put into practice during the next practical sessionโ ~ Justin Tan
“PSS always engages good and experienced instructors to teach and guide newer photographers in the industry. Hence I am confident in signing up for their courses. Their courses are structured and well organised and course fees are also very affordable. I always believe constructive critiques will definitely help photographer to improve and Derrick Ong’s critiques helped me in my photo-making so much!” ~ Helen Ang
“Wonderful workshop that gave us the opportunity to interact with beneficiaries of SPD. Itโs a beautiful blend of learning more about documentary style photography, finding different shot angles for greater interest in difficult situations, receiving feedback and tips from an esteemed photographer, and learning to work with other photographers, all in all, a great experience!” ~ Cheryl
“Grateful for the opportunity to build deeper empathy for people with special needs in our community through the “Photography for Good” project supported by Photographic Society of Singapore and charity Organisation SPD. The project has given me the privilege to walk into the homes and lives of people. Besides witnessing and documenting the challenges first hand, I am also inspired by the positivity displayed by the individuals.” ~ Simon Siah
“A perfect opportunity to combine a masterclass on photojournalism with doing good for our community! We were organised into small groups during the practical sessions which enabled to us to gel as a team and capture magical moments without getting into the frames of one another. The guidance by our instructor, Derrick, was given opportunistically during the practical sessions; and photo review sessions were systematic with Derrick offering very specific critique to each participant. Learning together as a community also contributed to the pleasure and fruitfulness of this workshop. Overall, I had a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding time as a participant in this workshop!” ~ Kwek Kon Yew
“The Photography For Good was an excellent workshop combining the art of photography with a social cause and purpose. During the workshop, we not only learnt, practiced and got a chance to improve our photography, we also got sensitised to common and often ignored challenges of the community.” ~ Soumyajit Sarcar
“PFG Workshop is a great opportunity for any photographer not just to learn to shoot good photos that tell stores, but to truly learned about the parts of society that are disadvantaged and be involved in spreading awareness of such through photography.” ~ Edward Ng
“This workshop gave me another dimension into documentary photography. Firstly it gave me an opportunity to participate in creating public awareness on public transportation. Their daily work and events with collaboration with schools and communities.” ~ Joseph Ng
“Excellent workshop that has taught me to think about the story / theme behind what I’m taking.” ~ Alvin Chan
“Excellent Masterclass by Mindy! Got to actually learn what makes a picture โbetterโ and what it takes for me to capture it. Absolutely would recommend to a friend!” ~ Jay Reddy
