Double Honours for PSS
President
PSS President Mr. David Tay was among the those whose names
were on this year's National Honours List. He has been awarded the Public
/service Medal(PBM) for his notable contributions in social and community
work.
Mr. Tay, who was appointed Justice of the Peace last year, is currently
Chairman of Tampines Community Club's Management Committee and a Board Member of
People's Association.
Although he has devoted considerable amount of his time to community work, Mr
Tay has not neglected his love for photography for the last 38 years. Recently,
The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (RPS) has recognised his
achievements and contributions in this field. He was awarded the prestigious
Fenton Medal for having actively promoted photography and the RPS in Singapore,
and being the fist photographer to receive the coveted Cultural Medallion in
1982.
We extend our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Tay for scoring the double
honours.

PSS Honours Renowned Poet and
Philosopher - Mr. Daisaku Ikeda
The Council recently conferred the PSS Honorary Life Membership on Mr.
Daisaku Ikeda, President of Soka Gakkai International in Japan, in recognition
of the important role he has played in raising our awareness of the environment
through the art of photography.
The PSS Honorary Life Membership, the highest award of our Society, is
conferred on individuals who have made significant contributions to the art of
photography. Previous recipients include Mr. S Rajaratnam, former Second Deputy
Prime Minister; Mr Sidek Saniff, Senior Minister of State for the Environment;
Mr Yatiman Yusof, Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Information and the Arts);
Lady Yuen Peng McNeice, Prominent nature photographer; Professor Tommy Koh,
Ambassador-at-Large.
Apart from being a talented photographer, Mr Ikeda is also a renowned poet
and philosopher. His photographic works - like those in his Dialogue with
Nature series, which has been exhibited in many countries - provide a fresh
perspective to nature photography. They communicate his poetic vision to the
viewers.
Brazilian historian of photographic art, Mr Gilberto Ferrez described the
appeal of Mr Ikeda's exhibition thus: "The endless fascination of Mr. Ikeda's
photographs lies in the fact that his subjects pass through the filter of his
philosophy before appearing on film."
However, Mr Ikeda is very modest about his talent in photography. According
to him, "Photography is a form of culture accessible to the ordinary people. It
is not an art confined only to professional photographers. Rather, it is a
culture which anyone, regardless of race, age or sex, can acquire readily as a
hobby.
He has founded universities and museums, written numerous books and exchanged
views with many of the world's leading philosophers.
